Today was a very short day for us in terms of activities off of the boat. This morning we got up for the usual breakfast and then it was pretty much cruising all morning. At about 1:30 we got off of the boat and transferred to a bus to go into the city of Bamberg. We spent about four hours bussing to the city which was only 20 minutes away doing a tour around the city for about an hour or an hour and a half and then we had some free time to wander around in Bamberg. We then got back on the boat and that was pretty much it for the day. Dinner is usually served at 7 to 715 and that may very day by day. We may eat in the main dining room or in the lounge, upstairs, most of the time we do the lounge. If we eat in the main dining room we are at a table that will seat six. Eating in the lounge we will get a table for two or occasionally a table for four with a more laid-back relaxed atmosphere in the lounge. When I say that we eat in the lounge it is not really in the lounge itself but in a little dining area in front of the lounge toward the bow of the boat. They have a different menu with one entrée – the main dining room has three entries to pick from. Several times they had boiled shrimp – really very well done. We would check the dining room and the lounge menu to see which was best. Before supper at about 630 they have what they call port call which discusses what we will do the following day. And after supper, they will then have an hour or two or you can just sit around in the lounge listening to the pianist, who is quite good, and perhaps dance or just sit there and relax for a while and then to bed.
Additional Information
Sail through the morning; after lunch, we visit Bamberg, with its medieval city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your walking tour includes a visit to the magnificent 11th-century cathedral, reworked in late Romanesque style in the 13th century, and the picturesque city hall built on a tiny island in the middle of a river. Take some free time to enjoy Bamberg and perhaps try some of the town’s distinctive smoke-flavored beer before returning aboard. (B, L, D)
