October 2024: Fall Plantings

Some plants can be planted by seeding but to help ensure some flowering plants. You may find it better to transplant plants that have already been started and are available in many of our local nurseries or garden centers. You should also be aware that our growing zone/area is Zone 9a.

The lists that I will show below are from local garden centers that I have looked at during the past couple of weeks. Not all garden centers will have all of the listed plants, and you will also find plants that I have not listed. But it is now a much cooler time of the year and welcome exercise to get out and dig in the dirt (soil). Don’t forget you still have time as the typical date of the first frost in Fairhope is the last week in November.

First, let’s look at vegetables then flowering plants. Both lists are selections that I have seen at just one garden center in our area. I have been to several other garden centers and have seen pretty much the same thing. So, take some time off one afternoon and spend a relaxing afternoon going to garden centers and seeing what they have.

Probably the most common vegetables are from the list below:

  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Herbs
  • Kale
  • Lettuce
  • Peppers
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries
  • Tomato

Most of the above plants can be found at local garden centers in our area. You will also find many different varieties of peppers, kale, lettuce, herbs etc. I.E. you can find purple kale, russian kale, curly kale, etc.

When you go looking for your vegetables you will also want to look at flowering plants. This is truly a glorious time of the year to get some last of the year coloring in your yard.

The list I show below is from just one garden center in our area. For each flowering plant I have supplied a link to specific directions on how to grow, care, and maintain the plant. This is not an all-inclusive list but certainly gives you an idea of what is available to us in our area:
